CATS (Computer & Training Skills)

The CATS (Computer & Training Skills) course is designed to address computer skills, employability skills, and goal setting skills. These objectives are pursued with an integrated approach. Portions of the program are regimented, while others encourage the students to contribute to the design of their learning plan.

The computer skills portion of the program is designed with the assumption that participants begin the program with limited experience. During the program students are introduced to the Windows operating system, portions of the Microsoft Office Suite, using an internet browser, and email. By the end of the program students should be able to search the internet for employment resources, produce, save, and continuously edit word processing documents such as business letters and resumes, and apply for employment by attaching documents to email correspondence. Students will also be introduced to digital photography.

The employability skills portion of the program is based on the Conference Board of Canada's Employability Skills 2000+. Students will work on communication, managing information, critical thinking and problem solving, working with others, and exhibiting a positive attitude while executing tasks.

The goal setting skills portion of the program is designed following the model of SMART (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and timely) goals. Students can design goals centered on academic achievement, social development, physical well being, or other facets of personal development. Students will be given the opportunity to set widespread goals for this portion of the program. If they are unable to clearly define personal goals at the program outset, they will go through several instructor designed goal processes until they can articulate a goal of their own. The underlying principle of the program is that as students design and pursue personal goals, they will inevitably work their way through the skills mentioned above in the employability skills section.

The course will also address other factors that contribute to successful employability including nutrition on a fixed income, physical fitness, and other determinants of health.
