Educational Opportunities For Adults of all Ages
|
The Colchester Adult Learning Association believes every adult has a right to an education. Regardless of your age, income or life situation CALA provides services to assist adult learners....at no cost. Ranging from GED preparation to family literacy, from English as a second language to computer education, CALA helps adults learn using small classes and one on one tutoring.

CALA has been helping adult learners for more than fifteen years and has seen many successes. Our programs follow provincially set curriculum, but the information is delivered in a way to fit the individual and allows the adult student to progress at their own pace. Using this principle, each one of CALA's clients can learn at the perfect rate based on their abilities.

As a not for profit organization, CALA owes so much to the volunteers and staff that make the organization what it has become today. CALA is a success story that gives back to the community many times over, helping adults participate more fully in the home, community, and work place.

Easing the transition into a new culture, new language and new community.

Teaching Immigrants English (T.I.E.) is an ESL Program designed to assist immigrants with language needs. It is offered in the Truro area through CALA.

Although the focus is on language development, newcomers to the area face many challenges as they adjust to a new culture and settle into their new community. CALA uses local Truro Daily Newspapers to provide a rich resource for boosting language as well as broadening community activities and cultural awareness. Special thanks to the Truro Daily News for their support of this program.

Family literacy is the sharing of experiences and meanings through reading and numeracy activities within the context of family living.

Since parents are their children's first and most important teachers in the cycle of learning, their responsibility to support and enhance the child's positive learning experiences from infancy to adulthood cannot be overstated. Family literacy has been determined to be the strongest element in shaping lives.

In our community there is a significant population between the ages of 30 - 54 who are facing very real employability barriers. Either under or unemployed these people are caught in the "gap" - an interstitial point in their lives where the individual is unable to find employment because of a lack of employment related skills, inadequate education and limited life (soft) skills. Regardless of the reason, extended periods of time away from the workforce is a problem that compounds itself. At the point where these people are ready to re-enter the job market their skills are lacking in many areas. Overcoming these obstacles seems unapproachable and re-entering the workplace near impossible.
